Support: Outlook Express Email Setup

To begin, please ensure that you have your e-mail address and password handy. Open Microsoft Outlook Express. Please note, the screenshots below were taken with the Windows XP version of Outlook Express. If you are using a different operating system, the visuals may look different but the steps should be the same.

When Outlook has finished launching, you’ll be prompted to start creating an e-mail account. The first step is to enter your name. Please note that your name will appear on all outgoing messages exactly as you enter it here.

After pressing Next, you’ll be prompted to enter your e-mail address.

Next, you’ll be asked to enter some basic server configuration. Please note that we use an IMAP type mailserver and not POP mailserver. Outlook Express must be changed to reflect this in the Server Type dropdown. Note that the address for both the incoming and outgoing mailservers are

When you have finished entering this information, it should look like this:

The next step requires you to enter your e-mail account credentials - that is, your username and password. Normally, your username will consist of your full e-mail address. In our case here, our user has the username of You may enter your password here if you wish.

Important Note: When you dismiss this dialog box, outlook express may try to check your e-mail. It will fail. There are a few more steps required to configure your account to get it up and running perfectly. This is normal at this point.

Now, we need to change a few options to get mail working properly. Access the Outlook Express menu and first click Tools and then Accounts…

From here, select the Mail tab and click on Properties to edit your new account.

In the account configuration dialog, we first need to change our Outgoing Mail Port from 25 to 8025. To find this setting, click on the Advanced tab up top.

Finally, we need to tell Outlook Express where to find your e-mail. Click on the IMAP tab at the top of the dialog box and change the Root folder path from blank to “INBOX” (minus the quotation marks).
